The Opportunity Exists. Access Is Another Story.

An artist is invited to exhibit in Washington, DC, but cannot afford three months of accommodation.

A writer discovers an opportunity to research a story, but the cost of temporarily relocating makes the project financially unrealistic.

A cultural practitioner wants to experience a different community, build relationships, and expand their practice, but traditional accommodation costs put the experience out of reach.

The opportunities exist. The resources to access them do not always follow.

Living Every Cent exists to help bridge that gap.

We're a community-centered initiative reimagining travel for sustainable growth and sourcing accessible opportunities for people to explore, learn, create, and connect across cultures.

We believe meaningful experiences should be pursued with intention—not at the expense of financial stability.

Through the Living Every Cent Housing Sponsorship, we're putting that philosophy into practice.

In partnership with Sustainably Sinful at The Ontario Residency, we help make temporary housing in Washington, DC more accessible to independent artists, writers, cultural researchers, and creative practitioners.

Who We Especially Encourage

Basic Eligibility

Applicants must:

• Be at least 18 years old and legally able to enter into a residential agreement.
• Have a creative, cultural, educational, or research purpose for their stay.
• Be pursuing an identifiable opportunity in Washington, DC and explain how the residency would support their development.

• Commit to a residency of one to three months, subject to availability and approval.
• Agree to follow The Ontario's building rules, housing agreements, and community expectations.
• Meet applicable immigration requirements for the duration of their stay (for international applicants).

How Applications Are Evaluated

We recognize that financial barriers look different for everyone. Applicants are not required to prove extreme hardship or disclose extensive personal financial information.

The sponsorship selection process considers three central questions.

1. What opportunity are you pursuing?
Tell us what brings you to Washington, DC. This could be an exhibition, independent research project, creative collaboration, professional development opportunity, or a period of focused artistic exploration.

2. What barriers stand between you and that opportunity?
Help us understand how accommodation costs affect your ability to participate. You do not need to share detailed bank statements, credit scores, or personal financial records.

3. What difference would housing sponsorship make?
Describe how reducing your monthly housing costs would support your goals, financial sustainability, or ability to engage meaningfully with the experience.

Selection Priorities

Applications are reviewed with consideration for:

• Accessibility: The degree to which sponsorship expands the applicant's ability to pursue an opportunity.
• Purpose: A clear and meaningful creative, cultural, educational, or research intention.
• Sustainability: A realistic plan for participating in the residency without creating avoidable financial hardship.
• Community: Respect for the residential environment and openness to cultural exchange.
• Availability: Alignment with residency dates and available sponsorship capacity.

Housing sponsorship is not automatically guaranteed by acceptance into the residency. Award decisions are communicated before applicants commit to a stay.

How to Apply

We've designed the process to be straightforward, accessible, and respectful of your time.

Step 1 — Apply to the Residency
Submit a brief application to Sustainably Sinful at The Ontario Residency, including your creative interests, proposed dates, and purpose for staying in Washington, DC.

Indicate that you would like to be considered for the Living Every Cent Housing Sponsorship. You'll be asked to briefly describe your opportunity, the financial barriers you face, and how a reduced housing rate would help.

Step 3 — Application Review
Residency applications are evaluated for suitability and availability. Housing sponsorship requests are considered according to financial accessibility, proposed purpose, and available support.

Step 4 — Receive Your Offer
Selected applicants receive written confirmation of their approved housing rate, residency dates, financial obligations, and any applicable conditions.

Step 5 — Confirm Your Stay
Once the applicant accepts the terms and completes the required residential arrangements, the residency is confirmed.

No applicant is required to accept a residency before reviewing the complete financial terms.

The Living Every Cent Philosophy

People. Planet. Pocket.

We believe meaningful mobility requires balancing three responsibilities.

People — Experience through connection
Travel should create opportunities for genuine exchange, mutual understanding, and respect for the communities we enter.

Planet — Experience with intention
Longer stays, thoughtful consumption, and awareness of our environmental impact can help us engage more responsibly with the places we visit.

Pocket — Experience without financial abandonment
Exploration and financial responsibility are not mutually exclusive. We encourage experiences that support personal growth while respecting long-term financial well-being.

Our work is grounded in a simple question:

What becomes possible when we remove some of the financial barriers standing between people and meaningful experiences?

The Living Every Cent Housing Sponsorship is one answer.

Our Philosophy: People × Planet × Pocket

We believe that sustainable growth requires a balance between human connection, environmental awareness, and financial reason.

Our philosophy advocates for intentional spending that supports local communities and minimizes waste, ensuring that exploration remains accessible and ethical for both the traveler and the host city.
